A Turkish original film trilogy that takes place during the early 20th century. An elegant prince imprisoned by the Ottoman sultan Ibrahim (of Karacaoğlan lineage), who does not wish for him to assume the throne. Arif and Kelek enter the palace, becoming the door-keepers. They, along with Kerem, are imprisoned for their efforts. In prison, they learn the identity of the real royal heir.

The story is set in 1909, and portrays the troubled and turbulent times in the Ottoman Empire. The transition from the last years of the Ottoman sultan Abdülhamid II to the new sultan Mehmed V in 1909 is told through the life of the Sultan’s favorite advisor, Ali Rıza Bey. The aging Ali Rıza Bey is seen as “the key to uncovering secrets”. The sultan’s advisor is also unable to reveal the reasons behind the sultan’s changing favor. Ali Rıza Bey’s attempts to gain the Sultan’s support led him to prison and, ultimately, the Ottoman throne.

The major part of the trilogy is about the rebellions that took place against the Ottoman sultan and the his son Mehmed V (and their reigns) at the time. It shows the political machinations of Ali Rıza Bey, as well as his conflicts with the diplomat and statesman Yusuf Vardar and Sultan Mehmed V’s right-hand man, Muammer Edhem Pasha.

The second part is set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, beginning after the Young Turk Revolution of 1908. The establishment of the republic is narrated through the life of the new hero of the story, Şükrü Bey. His struggle against the last sultan, Selim III, culminates in an assassination attempt, which causes the Young Turk revolution, and continues with the betrayal of Şükrü Bey, who is later appointed as the first president of the Ottoman Republic. The final part of the trilogy focuses on the life of a 20th century hero, Ali Rıza Bey, who is appointed as the Sultanate’s third sultan.

The first part of the trilogy, titled “1909” was the only one to be completed in the Turkish original.

It premiered at the 2008 International Istanbul Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Feature Film.
